Angioedema, which is also called by others as Quincke’s edema, is the swelling occurring in the tissue under the skin’s surface. The skin ailment is usually an allergic reaction to a medication or food.

Occurrence of Angioedema should also be given proper attention and focus because it may indicate an underlying condition of more serious ailment or sickness like leukemia or Hodgkin’s disease.

In the medical world, there are two basic divisions or classification of angioedema. One, it can be hereditary angioedema or HAE—this is genetically acquired or inborn and will tend to constantly recur despite intense treatment.

The other is termed ‘acquired angioedema or AAE, which as the name suggests is acquired through other means beyond genetic factors.

Angioedema can take minutes or even hours to completely develop. One interesting thing about angioedema is that it can infect or affect one side or area of the body, while the other side, or other areas, is not affected.

It is important to know basic facts, prevention and treatment of angioedema because the skin ailment could be fatal if untreated.

Identifying angioedema

Symptoms and indications that a person has angioedema vary. Usually, the disease affect the eyelids, the tongue, the lips, the palms, the soles, the throat, and shocking as it may be, in several instances in the genitals. Any from these body areas can feel pain and burning sensation. Often, the infected part is also swollen.

Breathing troubles, especially those instances characterized by swollen or tight-feeling throat with hoarseness can also indicate the presence of angioedema.

In some recorded instances, there were also abdominal pain and diarrhea. These can be accompanied by reduced or diminished appetite and sometimes, nausea or vomiting.

Physically, one can simply tell if a person has angioedema if the area surrounding or around the eyes of a person is extraordinarily swollen. To verify the suspicion, check if the person has discolored rashes or patches in the face, the feet, the hands, and if it will possible to check on this body area, the genital or sex organ.

There is another type of angioedema that is also called angioedema-eosinophilia syndrome, when the person feel like having fever, hives or itchiness. This form of angioedema is also characterized by high level or count of white blood cells, muscle pain, weight gain or decreased or diminished urination.

Treating angioedema

Doctors and hospital personnels’ first and primary concern when treating angioedema is making sure that airway is unblocked or open or that the breathing is practically not disturbed.

There are several drugs that are often prescribed to treat the disease. Among them are antihistamines, corticosteroids and epinephrine.

If the angioedema attack is somehow severe, make sure the patient is rushed to the nearest hospital because professional personnel will have to first open blocked airways to help stabilize the victim’s condition.

Prevention

There are several food additives and foods that are known to trigger angioedema attacks on several people. If you have an angioedema history, it is important to stay away or eliminate the following food from your daily diet.

- Berries
- Chocolate
- Legumes
- Seafood
- Milk
- Eggs
- Nuts

Some people are also advised not to eat citrus fruits and food and beverage with sulfites, including some fermented beverages.

—————————————-

In this piece of writing I am going to throw some light on two main and famous diseases Angioedema and lupus which may prove informative and useful for the victims of these health concerns. Both these allergic diseases are damaging and perilous for the human life. More often than not Angioedema and Lupus both are caused by an allergic reaction either to a food or medication. I hope you can easily appreciate these two health disorders after reading this editorial properly. For your convenience and better comprehension these two diseases are being discussed separately so that you can easily have a better idea.

Angioedema is a disease that refers to inflammation that happens just below the surface of the skin, most often effects on lips and eyes. Angioedema is an allergic reaction when body produces histamine that causes blood vessels to swell. Angioedema is similar to hives but it is a deeper swelling where as hives create itchy red welts on the surface of your skin. Also the things such as insect stings or pollen can also cause angioedema. Angioedema has got two basic types; hereditary angioedema (HAE) and Acquired angioedema (AAE). Angioedema may take from minutes to even hours to grow. In the majority of cases, angioedema is mild. Severe angioedema can often effect on the internal organs of the body like throat or tongue to swell and blocking the airway which can be life threatening. Most of the times the cause of this disease is unknown but angioedema reaction may be caused by allergies to specific foods and certain medications. Foods that often spark allergies include shellfish, milk and nuts. Drugs that often trigger allergic reactions include antibiotics, blood pressure medications and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Common Signs and Symptoms include: speedy occurrence of red welts around eyes and lips also on the hands, feet and inside of the throat as well as burning, painful, swollen areas, itchy-discolored patches or rash on the hands, feet, face, or private areas.

Lupus is a disease which can be generally described in simple words as a breakdown of the immune system as it stops working and the body literally harms itself, demolishing its own healthy cells and tissues. The immune system starts producing harmful antibodies that cause inflammation and tissue damage to the parts of the body like joints, skin, blood vessels, lungs, heart, kidneys and brain. In this way it affects much health of many people. In fact immune system of a human being works by producing immunity cells and antibodies and special matter to fight against germs and infection. Some main types of lupus include lupus erythematosus, drug induced lupus erythematosus etc.

Angioedema is a similar condition to hives, although in the latter case, the swelling takes place on the skin’s upper dermis. In angioedema, swelling takes place rapidly in the the patient. That swelling can happen in different parts of the individual’s body, namely: mucous membranes, submucosal tissues, subcutaneous fat, and the dermis.

Symptoms of an episode of the condition can change in one case to the next, although swelling is generally considered to be part of such an episode. Other symptoms may occur, such as urticaria (hives), and an itching sensation or even sensation loss in the areas that have swollen.

Angioedema can be caused by different underlying medical conditions. There are different classifications of the condition, and these types may also have different medical causes. The allergic form takes place as a reaction to allergies the patient has. Hereditary angioedema is an inherited form of the condition. Drug-induced angioedema is related to the use of particular medicines. Additionally, lymphoma can lead to acquired angioedema.

In those who have angioedema, triggers can lead to episodes. There are various categories of triggers, with several being certain food items, environmental factors, illnesses, and physical issues, along with others. As mentioned in the causes area, some medications can lead to angioedema, and episodes can also come following particular medicines.

Diagnosis of angioedema is often made through blood tests, although the hereditary type can often be mistaken for allergies and not diagnosed for some time. Treatment varies in different cases and forms, however, avoiding triggers is often a method of treatment and attempted prevention of episodes.
